Sami Albert Hynninen at Noise for Fiction mastering Studio Turku

mastering studio Noise for Fiction

We had a very nice session with Sami Albert Hynninen today at Noise for Fiction Recording studio. Sami came to master Azrael Rising album.

It is the collection of songs from 3 different sessions far apart. That kind of mastering works is always a bit give and take because you have to find kind of common denominator between different sound ideals.

Here genre and arrangements were same but sessions were recorded in the different studios and different years. We tried to honor original mixes but same time to give more weight and bring more nuances forward and make songs sound a bit more similar as far as loudness, stereo field and spectrum goes.

Vinyl as format gives you some restrictions and I had to compress and cut some harsh high-frequency transients to make cutting working out better. In this metal genre, there is not a so much low end to worry about.

This record is released in the vinyl format through  Primitive Reaction record label. Vinyl is a good format for collections because you have naturally two sides where you divide song in chronological order or order that helps sounds to give coherent listening experience. Song order and pauses between songs that create rhythm and pulse of the album, kind of dramatic manuscript of record are the important part of mastering. Sami and I always spend quite a while to listen to songs, pauses and transitions to get them exactly right.

The day went by fast with Sami, we have done many records together before and it always makes my day, listen to good music in good company and have good conversation and a nice cup of coffee .
